Western League Park
Also Known As: Holcomb ParkLocation: Des Moines, IA
4th Street & Grand Avenue.
Capacity: 12,000 for first night game (1930)
League Park was the site of the first night game to be played under permanent light standards, May 2, 1930. It was the second in minor league history. Owner Lee Keyser attempted to attract national attention to Des Moines. He invited Baseball Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis and a host of baseball dignitaries including Branch Rickey of the Cincinnati Reds. NBC agreed to broadcast the game nationally, but because of previous programming commitments, the broadcast could not start until 10:30 p.m. Eastern time. Keyser pushed back the game start to accommodate NBC, allowing the network to broadcast the final five innings, until 1 a.m.
