Next to the ocean, the field was built in 1936, under WPA auspices for $25,000. Named for H. William "Hardrock" Lane, a local baseball magnate, the field's OF fences were 7-feet high. Luke Easter cleared the scoreboard in CF in 1949, 500 feet on the fly. The catcher faced NE. A mere 12 feet separated home plate from the backstop, the shortest distance in the history of OB. This proved hazardous for fans sitting behind home plate in the days before a screen was erected, and wild pitches would bounce right back to the catcher, preventing the runners from moving up. The park had been in use for many years before it was discovered that the distance from home to first was only 87 feet.
