The park was built in 1880. First game was April 17, 1887. New Orleans acquired a franchise in the Southern League in 1887; that year, Abner Powell came to town to manage and pitch for the Pelicans. He later became the owner. Because of the frequent thundershowers that beset New Orleans in the summer, Powell is credited with the invention of the rain check and the infield cover. He was also one of the first to use Ladies' day as a promotion. Two leagues occupied the park in 1912. The park, remodeled for the 1908 season, was dismantled after the 1914 campaign. The grandstand was carried in pieces, to be set up at Pelican Stadium.
