Smithson Stadium was named for City Councilman W.N. Smithson, who spearheaded the drive to tear down Caswell Park and erect a new stadium. The park was destroyed by fire in 1953, and rebuilt. It was renamed Bill Meyer Stadium in 1957, to honor native son and long-time National League manager, Bill Meyer, and later, Neil Ridley Field at Billy Meyer Stadium.
