Ponce de Leon Park II

Also Known As: Spiller Park 1924-1931
Location: Atlanta, GA
650 Ponce de Leon Avenue NE, RF bordered the Southern RR tracks.
Capacity: 15,500 (1939); 14,500 (1950); 12,500 (1961)
Dimensions (Left, Center, Right): 365-462-321 (1923-1950) 330-410-321 (1951-1964)
The park was originally named Ponce de Leon Park. However, after it burned in 1923, it was rebuilt in concrete and steel, and renamed Spiller Park after club president, Tell J. Spiller. The name reverted to Ponce de Leon Park in 1932. The catcher faced NE. The scoreboard was in LCF, and a magnolia tree grew in RCF. In 1949, a two-foot hedge was planted from LF straight across to CF, to reduce the home run distance. Outfielders would catch flies on the run, and fall over the hedge, creating ground-rule homers. This was deemed hazardous to the outfielders, and the hedge was later replaced by a four-foot fence. In 1931, a large Sears store occupied the area, previously occupied by Ponce De Leon Amusement Park. Spiller Park, once called the most magnificent in the minors, was torn down in 1967.
