The Yakult Swallows of the Japan Central League ended the 1979 season with a record of 48 wins and 69 losses, finishing sixth in the JPCL.
The Swallows scored 550 runs, worst in the league, and yielded 646 runs, most in the circuit. John Scott led Yakult with 28 home runs, while Dave Hilton, Katsuo Osugi, Tsutomu Wakamatsu and Toru Sugiura each walloped 15 or more, too. John Scott drove in 81 runs. Tsutomu Wakamatsu topped batters with significant playing time by hitting .306. Kenichi Kajima paced the squad with 10 wins, and Hiromu Matsuoka registered a 3.97 earned run average, best among regularly-used pitchers.
