The Shreveport Captains of the Texas League (Dixie Association) ended the 1971 season with a record of 69 wins and 73 losses, finishing third in the league's Central Division.

The Captains scored 553 runs and allowed 581 runs, most in the circuit. Larry Hanson and Don Wilkinson led Shreveport with 18 home runs apiece., and Doug Howard walloped 15 or more, too. Doug Howard drove in 76 runs. Rudy Meoli paced all regular batters by connecting at a .287 clip. Tony Barrientos topped the squad with 13 wins and a team-best 3.44 earned run average, best among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.
