The Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League ended the 1997 season with a record of 79 wins and 63 losses, finishing first in the league's North Division.

Kevin Millar walloped 32 home runs for the squad, while Josh Booty, John Roskos, Ryan Jackson, Mark Kotsay and Álex González each swatted 15 or more, too. Kevin Millar drove in 131 runs and topped all regular batters by connecting at a .342 clip. Héctor Mercado led the squad with 11 wins and a team-best 3.97 earned run average, tops among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.
