The Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League ended the 1998 season with a record of 81 wins and 60 losses, finishing first in the league's North Division.
The Suns led the circuit with just 567 runs allowed. Hagerstown scored 712 runs. Bobby Cripps paced the squad with 29 home runs, while Michael Young, Greg Morrison and Lorenzo Bagley each walloped 15 or more also. Bobby Cripps drove in 88 runs. Vernon Wells topped all regular batters by hitting .285. John Sneed paced the team with 16 wins, and Clayton Andrews registered a 2.28 earned run average, best among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.
