The Hiroshima Toyo Carp of the Japan Central League ended the 1997 season with a record of 66 wins and 69 losses, finishing third in the JPCL.

The Toyo Carp scored 651 runs and surrendered 653 runs, most in the circuit. Tomoaki Kanemoto walloped 33 home runs for Hiroshima, while Tomonori Maeda, Akira Eto, Koichi Ogata and Luis Lopez each swatted 15 or more also. Luis Lopez drove in 112 runs and topped batters with significant playing time by connecting at a .320 clip. Toshikazu Sawazaki led the squad with 12 wins, and Yutaka Ono recorded a 2.86 ERA, best among qualifying pitchers.
