The Greensboro Hornets of the South Atlantic League ended the 1981 season with a record of 98 wins and 43 losses, finishing first in the league's North Division.

The Hornets paced the circuit with 788 runs, sparked by 147 home runs. Greensboro allowed 560 runs. Tom Dodd powered the team with 29 home runs, while Todd Demeter, Jeff Reynolds, Bob Helsom and Matt Winters each walloped 15 or more also. Jeff Reynolds drove in 103 runs and topped all regular batters by connecting at a .306 clip. Kelly Scott led the squad with 16 wins, and Mark Cartwright also added 15 or more victories also Marty Mason recorded a 2.73 ERA, leading pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.
