The Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association ended the 1978-79 season with a record of 33 wins and 41 losses and 6 ties for 72 points, finishing fifth in the WHA. The team compiled a postseason mark of 1-2.

The Stingers scored 274 goals and surrendered 284. Peter Marsh netted 43 goals for Cincinnati, while Reg Thomas, Jamie Hislop and Robbie Ftorek each tallied 30 or more, too. Robbie Ftorek contributed 77 assists. Mike Liut earned 23 wins in front of the net for the squad, and Michel Dion recorded a 3.32 goals against average, pacing goaltenders with enough qualifying appearances.

Floyd Smith coached the team. The 1978-79 Cincinnati Stingers lost in the AVCO Cup preliminary round.
