The New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association ended the 1972-73 season with a record of 46 wins and 30 losses and 2 ties for 94 points, finishing first in the WHA's WHA East Division. The team compiled a postseason mark of 12-3.
The Whalers paced the circuit with 318 goals. New England surrendered 263 goals. Tom Webster scored 53 goals for the squad, while Larry Pleau, Tim Sheehy and Terry Caffery each netted 30 or more, too. Terry Caffery contributed 61 assists. Al Smith earned 31 wins in front of the net for the team, plus Bruce Landon added 15 or more wins, too. Al Smith earned a 3.18 goals against average, pacing regular goalies.
Jack Kelley coached the team. The 1972-73 New England Whalers won the AVCO Cup.
