The Tigers plated 557 runs, worst in the circuit, and conceded 738 runs, most in the league. Walt Dropo paced Detroit with 23 home runs, while Vic Wertz walloped 20 or more as well. Walt Dropo drove in 70 runs. Johnny Groth led all qualifying hitters on the roster by hitting .284. Ted Gray topped the squad with 12 wins, and Hal Newhouser recorded a 3.74 ERA, leading regularly-used pitchers.
