The Cincinnati Reds of the National League ended the 1979 season with a record of 90 wins and 71 losses, finishing first in the NL's West Division.

The Reds scored 731 runs and surrendered 644 runs. George Foster walloped 30 home runs for Cincinnati, while Johnny Bench, Dave Concepcion and Dan Driessen each swatted 20 or more also. George Foster drove in 98 runs. Ray Knight led all qualifying hitters on the roster by hitting .318. Tom Seaver topped the team with 16 wins, and Tom Hume earned a 2.76 ERA, best among regularly-used pitchers.

John McNamara coached the team. The 1979 Cincinnati Reds qualified for the playoffs as a division winner.
